A dreamy and elegant flight in the sky, up and down, tearing the sand of the sky, but falling as light as a feather, graceful as the twisting of a fish’s tail in the depths of the ocean. The unique, ephemeral, moment-to-moment movement of large puppets and objects made of polyethylene films will remind some of a flying bird, others – a swimming fish; will take some to the underwater world, others – to the heights of the sky, or maybe – to the sea dwellers diving in the sky’s vaults. And will invite you to see their beautiful, calm, perhaps somewhat sad dance.
According to paleobiologist Jan Zalasiewicz, “All the plastic ever made is enough to wrap the entire world in plastic wrap.” On land, we dig deep for plastic, hide it in layers of landfills, cover it with clods of earth, leaving enigmatic traces of our era for future generations, but the fate of plastic that has reached the oceans is completely different. Some of it will wash ashore or be eaten by wildlife: birds, turtles, fish and whales mistake plastic debris for food and then suffocate or starve to death as their stomachs clog up. Most of the plastic will remain in the ocean, where it will break down into small fragments – microplastics. Microplastics have already been found not only in the global ocean, but also in the Mariana Trench, in the glaciers of Antarctica. Microplastics are also found in marine animals that humans consume, which means that the plastic cup we throw away will one day end up on our dinner table. We ate what we threw away.
Life came from water, therefore man too. If plastic covering the entire ocean and suffocating it easily drives its inhabitants out of their homes, if instead of jellyfish waves wash cellophane bags, and endangered and extinct fish species in the oceans are replaced by plastic containers, then what awaits man?
